In recent years, yoga has grown in popularity around the world. Even in Singapore, there are already so many studios located in our tiny island. There are quite a number of people who mistake yoga to be related with aerobics. The truth is that it is non-aerobic. Then, there is the usual misconception that yoga is effortless, which isn’t the case. In fact, it requires effort in order for one to get into the postures. It may seem like quite a challenge at first, but with regular practice, you will be able to pull it off.

There are countless benefits when one starts to practice yoga. These benefits include better flexibility, increased strength and good health. One of the main benefits in yoga that ladies tend to look out for is its ability to assist in losing weight. So how does yoga actually helps in this?

Firstly, yoga activates the thyroid gland through the shoulder stand. It is an inverted pose that is quite similar to a head stand, but is definitely easier to perform. This posture helps to promotes thyroid activity.

Secondly, yoga stimulates the gastrointestinal (GI) tract’s vital force. Poor digestion and weigh gain can actually be the result of a GI tract that is damaged or weak and a sluggish liver. With an active liver, one will have improved metabolism and digestion. At the same time, it will help to reduce cravings that can ultimately lead to ingesting unhealthy foods and beverages. Back bending exercises in yoga can help in this area.

Thirdly, the sun salutation postures in yoga can activate internal body heat and increase heart rate. These postures are an exception to the non-aerobic rule. However, not everyone uses it. There are a total of 12 positions for this, involving short standing pauses between each. Through this stop and start motion, your cardio system gets pumped up.

Fourthly, yoga is a natural strength building workout as it involves balancing poses. Through this, it will increase your metabolism rate and build muscles simultanously.

Yoga is also capable of unclogging waste. This is achieved through a posture known as “bandhas”. which helps in flexing the colon.

Lastly, most hatha yoga sessions end with a “corpse pose”. Although it seems like a posture that anyone can pull off, it offers benefits that are underrated. In this posture, one is basically required to lay flat on their back and simply relax. If executed accurately, the chi energy channels are opened to cure ailments and relieve the urge to binge on “comfort food”. For the full article, check it out here.
