Just last Sunday, thousands of Taiwanese gathered for a mass yoga session in front of Taiwan’s Presidential Palace. The organisers estimated that the turnout was about 7,400 people. In fact, the event on Sunday attracted yogis from all around the country.

The hour long session kicked off at 8am with a round of meditation. After the participants relaxed and free their minds, they got their bodies into positions such as the downward facing dog, cobra, and child’s pose. There was quite a diverse crowd, ranging from young adults to those who are in their 80s. Despite their age differences, all of them had one thing in common, they approved of the benefits of the ancient exercise.

“Yoga can help us to release stress from our body and soul. The flexibility of our bodies can increase slowly and you can become more agile,” stated 23-year-old Chen Jing-kai.

“My leg was broken, and I was getting fat while I was recovering. I wanted to lose weight. I saw a TV show teaching yoga, but at the time there wasn’t anyone teaching in Yilan (county). When my teacher came, I started to learn and I’m becoming as skinny as before,” said Jiang A-mei, an 81-year-old senior.

The organiser of the event was Pure Yoga, which is a Yoga training chain of the Pure Group. They mentioned that they hoped to promote Yoga as a sport for all ages to improve people’s health and energy. Colin Grant, the CEO of Pure Yoga, also added that they were happy with the turnout on Sunday. “The main reason for doing this event is to increase wellness of yoga and also to force kind of a healthier, better lifestyle. And I think the more people practice yoga, they will be healthier. And it’s very good in Taipei we have very good turnout today,” he explained. This is the second year in a front that the event has been held. The ultimate aim of Pure Yoga is to increase the awareness of yoga. At the same time, they also hope to show that yoga does not always have to be confined to indoors. For the full story, you can read it here.
