Sailing in the Mediterranean can be rather mundane after an extended period of time. This is why the Royal Clipper, the world’s largest sailing ship, makes it a point to offer yoga sessions twice a day as it travelled from the Bahamas to Malaga, and from Malaga to Civitavecchia. Sessions are held every morning at 7:30am and evenings by Christel Vollmer, who is a German yoga instructor.

Yoga on its own can be a challenge for beginners. Imagine practicing the workout on board a ship. You will definitely require a good amount of balance when the ship starts to sway or rock. “All the little muscles you use to keep your balance will be getting an extra workout,” said Christel, who trains with Bryan Kest. Bryan was the one who brought power yoga to Hollywood. His students include Madonna and Sting. When Christel first decided to offer yoga classes on board, she didn’t expect to get booked for next Summer as well.

Her style of yoga is a mix of power yoga and yin yoga. “Westerners don’t want to spend too long just meditating. I call it clipper yoga now,” she explained. One of her students is Phil from California. He had not missed a single session for the Atlantic leg. He stated that “Age brings you to yoga. You need it to retain a level of flexibility.”

Star Clippers offers a package for those who are interested in a one-week sailing voyage in the Mediterranean. Prices start from £1,307 per person, based on two people sharing. The best part of it all is that both meals and yoga are inclusive in the price stated. For the full story, you can check it out here.

The concept of having yoga at sea is rather unique. By practicing yoga on board, one also gets to experience the sea breeze while being surrounded by water. It’s the perfect getaway from the daily stressful life. Apart from that, you get to gain other benefits such as increased flexibility and improved balance. Yoga will also lead you onto the right track to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

At OMG Yoga, we do not have the opportunity yet to offer yoga classes at sea. However, we still do offer Power Yoga Classes and Yin Yoga Classes in Singapore. Our classes are usually conducted at the convenience of the client’s place. Alternatively, you can opt to have it outdoors in an open field or a park.
